Tales from the Industry
Factory Records: Bankrupted by Top Artists
In 1978, Tony Wilson, a television producer, and Alan Erasmus, an actor and band manager, started a club named The Factory in Manchester, England, as a venue for local bands. Rob Gretton, the manager of the band Joy Division did not want his band to sign with a London record label. Following the example of another local record label, he joined with Erasmus, Wilson, and producer Martin Hannett to found Factory Records. They set up an office in Erasmus’s apartment and released their first EP in 1979. In 1981, Hannett left the label, and Erasmus, Wilson, and Gretton formed Factory Communications Ltd.
